Part 2 Week of 11/15-11/19

Landon eventually falls for Jamie--the one thing he swore wouldn't happen. In your opinion, what do you think it was about Jamie that made Landon fall in love with her? Can you think of another example where an unexpected love came about between two people? Think of examples from your own life, movies, TV, or books you have read. Please explain your example fully.

Week of 11/15-11/19 ch. 5-10

Jamie believes that God has a master plan for her. She believes that the course of life is predetermined by a higher power--in other words, we don't have control over our own destineys. Do you believe we have control over our own destineys....or do you believe that the courses of our lives are determined from the moment we are born? Explain your answer.

Part 2 Week 11/8/10

In chapter 4, Landon is filling out his college application to UNC. The essay questions, as follows, are fairly typical:

If you could meet one person in history, who would it be and why? 
Name the most significant influence in your life and why you feel that way.
What do you look for in a role model and why?

Consider the above questions. Pick one and answer it. I am not looking for an essay, rather a decent sized paragraph.

Chapters 2-4 week of 11/8/10

We learn a lot about Jamie Sullivan in these chapters. Do a character analysis of Jamie in which you consider the following acronym: STEAL. 

The S stands for speech--what do Jamie's words reveal about her?
The T stands for thoughts--what do Landon's thoughts about Jamie reveal about her?
The E stands for effects on others--what sorts of reactions do other characters have toward Jamie?
The A stands for actions--what do Jamie's actions suggest about her?
The L stands for looks--what does Jamie's appearance suggest about her?

How does Sparks's technique of telling the story in a flashback format enrich the story? What is it about flashback that makes a story better, or more real?

Chapter one ends with the following:

and for the first time she looked--well, almost pretty.  Of course I dismissed that thought right away, but as she looked around the room, she stopped and smiled right at me, obviously glad to see that I was in the class. It wasn't until later that I would learn the reason why.

Why do you think Jamie is glad Landon is in her class? Why did the author choose to end the chapter with that last sentence---in other words, what does that last sentence contribute to the text?
